SATURN II

Recommended by neighbours whom we previously completed a project for, the owners of this semi-detached home sought our expertise to improve the social spaces of their home and create a connection between home and the site – qualities previously absent.

The south facing orientation to the rear garden was countered with a simple, though considered new structure containing kitchen, living and dining areas, popping out beyond the width of the existing dwelling and experiencing two outlooks. While deceptively simple, the project achieves a number of transformative outcomes. Through providing outlook and egress to the north side, an overlooked extended driveway becomes a garden space and informal second entry.  To the south main aspect, bi-folding glass doors open out to generous deck and garden. Cross ventilation is easily achieved.

Within the works, a smart laundry and powder room complement the newer social spaces, and are connected formally through limed vic ash joinery which unites the kitchen with the service spaces behind. The existing hemmed-in living room was more appropriately converted a bedroom, providing a much needed third bedroom for the growing family. Sensitivity in lengthening the dwelling and the associated issue of a lengthened hallway, lead to the hallway being broken with a refreshing view to the sky.

It was our first major renovation experience and we are very glad to have had Michael guide us through the process. Michael listened to our brief and created a home that we’re proud to show off and wake up in every day.
